The windshield does more than block wind
A windshield contributes to the vehicle's structural strength and supports the deployment of the passenger airbag. A significant crack can compromise both roles, along with your visibility.
Small chips vs. large cracks
A small chip that hasn't spread is generally lower-risk in the short term, but should still be addressed promptly since temperature changes and road vibration can cause it to spread — sometimes suddenly. A large crack, especially one crossing the driver's line of sight or reaching the edge of the glass, is a safety concern and shouldn't be driven on longer than necessary.
What to do
If a crack is small, get it assessed for repair as soon as possible. If it's large, obstructs your view, or the glass feels unstable, treat it as an emergency and avoid unnecessary driving until it's addressed.
