Why cold makes it worse
Glass contracts as it cools. A chip or crack is a structural weak point, and as the surrounding glass contracts unevenly around it, the stress can cause the damage to extend — sometimes dramatically overnight with no apparent trigger.
The defroster effect
Blasting a hot defroster directly onto a cold, chipped windshield creates a rapid temperature differential between the inside and outside surface of the glass. That's one of the most common ways a small chip turns into a long crack in winter.
What to do in cold weather
If you have a chip, warm the cabin gradually rather than blasting the defroster directly at the glass, park out of direct sun-to-shade extremes where possible, and get the chip assessed for repair before winter sets in if you can.
